Influence of art on cinema

Now that we saw different movements and different artists you may be able to recognize pieces of art in movies.

Many directors have integrated masterpieces into their movies and even got inspired by painting to create scenes.

Some references are obvious and some are a little less. But now that you are an expert you will quickly be aware of them.

One of my favourites is the reproduction by Stanley Kubrick of Vincent Van Gogh's painting" Prisoners exercising". On the left, we have the scene from the movie A Clockwork Orange (1971), and on the right the painting of Van Gogh.

Kubrick used the atmosphere of this painting to create a dehumanizing portrait of prisoners.

This may be less easy.

An artist that I particularly love, Francis Beacon paints the expressionism and surrealism movements.

Beacon, represented Pope Innocent X in 1949. This painting is inspired by the portrayal of Velazquez who represents a portrait of the Pope. Beacon re-interpreted it through a series of "screaming popes".

The dark Knight - Christopher Nolan

In his movie The dark knight, Christopher Nolan took his inspiration from the painting of Becon to create the character of the Joker.

Francis Beacon- Pope Innocent X

The death of Marat- Jacques Louis David

About Schmidt-Alexender Payne

As you can see here, Alexender Payne used the famous painting The Death of Marat for his movie. In that scene, the protagonist is unconscious in his path. His arm laying above the shower.
In one hand he is hanging a notebook where he wrote something, and in the other, he is holding a knife. You can quite easily make a comparison between the two pictures.

In those last pictures, the similitude is also pretty obvious. On the left, we can see the movie scenes and on the right the painting.

Metropolis(1927) Frittz Lang

Fritz Lang reproduced the Babel tower imagined by Brueghel in 1563.

Jacques Louis David
Sofia Copolla- Marie Antoinette
Sofia Coppola, got her inspiration to portray Napoleon from
the famous painting of Jacques-Louis David representing Napoleon. You can see the similitudes between the red cap, the horse and the hat.

Moonrise Kingdom- Wes Andreson

Alex Colville- To Prince Edward Island

Forest Gump-1994

Christina'sworld-Andrew Wyeth,1948

Ophelia- John Everett Millais
